 o
Unknown Mint

I bought a 'peppermint' cutting online, received it in god-awful condition but worked on planting it anyways. The plant is doing well, but it doesn't look quite like a peppermint to me, though I've never grown them before.

So, I pinched off a couple small pieces. Is this peppermint or something else? It looks like catmint to me.

Could be peppermint. Easiest way to tell is to crush a leaf and smell it.

And How should they each smell?

Peppermint has a lot of menthol in it so it should make your nose tingle. Catnip has an odd smell, not so minty, and has broader teeth than the leaves in your picture.

Catnip and catmint have a skunkiness to them. The leaves don't look like catnip or catmint to me. I don't grow a lot of mints, but I do grow catnip. In addition to the description by Lycopus, catnip leaves are a bit more heart-shaped.
What does the smell remind you of? Chewing gum? Peppermint Patty?
I just grabbed a clipping from a catnip plant outside my front door(much to the delight of 4 cats, the apartment now smells skunky). HTH
