Appears to be Curly Dock, Rumex crispus.

seedmoney thank you. i thought it looked like rhubarb & see it is related, edible & high in vitamins, though also a 'serious invasive species' & hard on the kidneys. maybe i should dig it up before it sheds 40,000 seeds. thanks again :)

The roots are long, like a carrot so dig it with a shovel. If you do, cut the root open and you'll see why it is called "yellow dock." The roots are the most beautiful shades of yellow inside.
