| Location: Western NY State, Northeastern Hardwood Forest located on the top of a sand hill so dry not moist forest location
The plant appears to be possibly a parasitic plant - no leaves and no green. It's not beechdrops. I thought maybe broomrape, but I can't seem to find a match. Can possibly be an alien species. Other alien species like Epipactis helleborine, vinca, and wisteria are in the same area. Many thanks! FataMorgana Entire Plant:

| Coralorhiza. Possibly maculata. I must admit I'm not terribly familiar with the species in the East. Very native to north America though. An orchid whose roots are late twisty fleshy rhizomes, resembling coral, hence the name. Not parasitic, but mycotrophic, relying on fungi for their sugar supply. |

| I don't know it, but I agree that it could be an orchid. It reminded me of the Tipularia that is popping up now with no foliage. |

| I noticed the orchid-like flowers but never guessed it to actually be an orchid. This is a totally new one to me and I agree, it does look like Corallorhiza maculata. I attached a link to an article on NY State orchids, of which C. maculata is one. I actually read this article a few years back when the magazine it is in came, but I never remembered or thought of coralroot. Orchids are so very uncommon here. I've only found blooming orchids other than this and Epipactis helleborine, in one location. Besides that, I've found lady slipper plants (sans blooms) a couple of times in other locations, but that is it. Special to see. Many thanks! FataMorgana |
