| I found a dense mat of tiny plants in the bottom of a golf course drainage ditch today. That ditch receives course maintenance water each morning, and then dries out in the afternoon. The large object in the first photo is a small part of an oak leaf.
The leaves were opposite, and less than 0.200 inch across. When I untangled some of the stems to check details, I could barely make out something at the leaf axils. After taking photos and cropping them at home, I found there were extremely small flowers at the base of each leaf. Those flowers were an estimated 0.030 inch across. I could not find one that revealed flower color, but think they have four sepals (and probalby four petals) each. Any idea as to species? |

| - Bacopa monnieri - or similar species? I don't see blossoms only sepals? |

| That's pretty amazing, saltcedar. I didn't expect anybody to determine genus, much less, suggest the probable species. Right now, I'm leaning toward B. monnieri. However, that species is supposed to have two bracts under the calyx, which isn't clear in my photos. B. rotundifolia and B. egensis both have leaves 0.400 to 0.600 inch wide, so those aren't likely candidates. I'll probably collect a specimen and pot it, so I can get better photos of the flowers when open, and review features with the 10x lens. Many thanks for your help. |
