By the stem growth, it looks to be a type of bamboo.

Of all the pics showing the stems of ginger plants I found online, those stems appear smooth, rather than the way it looks in your pic.

No - it's def. a ginger - bamboo has very different leaves.

Looks a lot like the flowering gingers I have.
