| A friend recently bought a house and is removing some of the overgrown shrubs and asked me if I want any. I took some pictures but they turned out only fair, darned iphone. any comments are very much appreciated.
Thanks, vince |

| It sort of looks like privet, but it's hard to be definite from that picture (no insult intended). Can you get another picture? If it is privet, I wish your friend all the luck in the world getting it out of the ground intact, and I don't recommend that you take it, as it will either need to be pruned regularly (like several times a year) or it will get enormous. Besides, they are quite inexpensive just about everywhere. |

| Thanks! I'm pretty sure it's privet from what I see on the internet. It's not something I want, and I don't have much extra room any more. vince |

| As lisanti07028 says, it is really hard to tell what it is from that picture. I'm not convinced it's privet as the leaves do not look right to me. I can't see if the leaves are opposite or not but from what I can make out of the twigs the buds look alternate. A better picture would help. But whatever it is it doesn't look very interesting for you to bother planting it. |

| There is at least one "Ugly Duckling" that's worth keeping.... |
Here is a link that might be useful: Chaenomeles

| You'reright Salt. But this doesn't look like Chaenomeles to me and it's been so hacked about it would need a good deal of work to make it look good. |
|
| Wish the OP would post a better image for all ours sakes. |

| I wish I had a better photo, but the shrub didn't photograph well due to the light and how it looks. Like it was said, it doesn't look that good, so I'm not going to bother with it. If I get another chance to see it, I'll try another shot. Thanks, vince |

| Chaenomeles is a possible, I think. Does it have spines like a wild plum, at all? That 'lax tangle' is fairly typical. They are not prim or particularly stiff in growth. If it is a shrubby quince then it will come back from quite hard pruning and can be reshaped. You might have to wait for 1-2 years before it settles to full flowering again, though. And some of them sucker - though not too badly. Some nectar drinking birds quite like them, too. Grow between three feet to 8-10', depending. And are very generous in flower, early to mid spring. |

| I agree the habit does look Chaenomeles-like but if you zoom in on the leaves they don't look right at all. Wrong veination, shape and texture. |
