Can anyone hazard a guess

Found this plant on a dry hillside in SW Michigan. All the leaves were gone but it was a fairly large plant. Plant was a forb, not a shrub, and had a single stem, @ 2 inches in diameter. The plant was a total of 6 feet tall, with a panicle on top @ 3 ft wide and 2 ft tall. Looked like a candelabra, but wasn't hyssop or yucca, that was a pyramid of stems with upward pointing seed pods, As can be seen from the picture the individual seed capsules are @ 1 inch in length, flat and @ 1/4 inch thick. The pods also only have two membranes/chambers, not multiple chambers like hibiscus does..
