Name That Plant!

common plant in Japan I cannot identify

This shrub is planted everywhere in Japan yet I cannot identify it. In Tokyo and Kyoto you cannot walk a city block without passing it. Can anybody help?

Reminds me of Pittosporum. I'm not familiar with this species though.

I thought Pittosporum but the leaves are pointed, and also surprisingly soft and matte.

That's the same thing I thought of - need to see them in bloom to be sureÃ¢ÂÂ¦.

Azalea 'Mrs. G. G. Gerbing' (Rhododendron indicum) is looking likely. If so, it was mid-summer so they would have been deadheaded.
