this was seen in scotland on a dune by inverness (Naarn was the actual location)I'm not even sure if I should call it a flower, so a name and possibly a bit of information about it would b much appreciated.

Judging by the seedhead it appers to be some type of Clematis.

Yes, definetly Clematis, as to what one possibly "vitalba"(old mans beard) but does not look fluffy enough.

Clematis vitalba aka Old Man's beard or Traveller's Joy is the only native Clematis we have. The seed heads become fluffier as they mature and dry out, but then, of course, here they are often clumped and sodden anyway because of the frequent rain.

However, do I see small yellow nodding bell shaped flowers in the background? Could be an escaped Clematis tangutica or other 'lemon peel' type. Was this near any gardens?

It was by a nature reserve and a camp site, if I remember correctly the camp site had garderns at the front, though i cant remember what was in them I'm afraid.

Can you say if there were yellow flowers? I think I can see at least 3 in the background. C tangutica does self sow so could well escape from a garden.

Here is a link that might be useful: Clematis tangutica

Those flowers were definatly there. So does that mean it's not a native species?

Yes, it does. We only have one native Clematis in the British Isles: C vitalba. C tangutica comes from W China/NW india.
