| Shot this in mid-August and am stumped as to ID 'cause I've never seen these flowers before.
The buds look a lot like Tassel Flower buds, so the plants might be related. The leaves resemble those of Asters, but the flowers aren't like those of any Aster I'm familiar with. The flowers look like a cross between a Tassel Flower and Blanket Flower, but don't match either independently. Of course, I could be completely off my rocker ;) Hoping someone here recognizes these prolific beauties.
Thanks in advance! |

| They look to be shasta daisies, Leucanthemum x superbum. What size are the flowers? There are dozens of cultivars, many of which produce frilly, doubled type flowers like in the photo......Crazy Daisy, Double Spider, Ice Star, Aglaia, Esther Reed, etc. Of course they could also be an early blooming mum :-) |
|
| Thanks so much for giving me a direction to search in! After my searching and comparing, I figured the plant flowers to be Leucanthemum x superbum -- Shasta Daisy 'Ice Star'. These doubles are tough 'cause they're rare around here =) Thank you again!! |

| I'd like to see some more pictures of this plant. I don't know Shasta 'Ice Star', although I am familiar with others, but in pictures of it the leaves look less fine than on this specimen. Also this plant appears to have leaflets right up the flowering stems to the bloom. Does Ice Star have that feature? And this looks as if the flower stems branch. The whole thing looks too airy for a Shasta but since I don't know Ice Star I may be off track entirely. What is the scale of the plant? How big are the flowers? can you get a picture of the basal leaves? And one from further back showing the whole plant? |
|
| Unfortunately I didn't take more photos of the plant as my mind wasn't on ID. But if you look at the flower at the top right you can clearly see the Daisy structure. I also did exhaustive comparative research between the web and the botanical garden's own plant database to confirm ID. There are some more photos 'n' info. at Dave's Garden, but this site blocks links to that site -- FYI.... It's a neat plant. Completely new to me, too! Wish I'd been thinking beyond the way the light was hitting the flowers to possible ID issues when I was on location, but alas I wasn't. I am confident in the final ID, though -- especially since the botanical garden lists this species in the exact location I photographed them in =) They may still be in bloom on my return visit & I'll make sure to get macro shots for yaz. Thanks again everyone! |

| I'm not contesting for a moment that it's a member of the vast daisy tribe, fizgig777. But without any scale and with those fine leaves up the bloom stalks it just doesn't look look a shasta to me. I have looked at a lot of photos of Ice Star and all have bare unbranched flowering stems. But I'm quite happy to be wrong. Compare your plant with Kalimeris pinnatifida 'Hortensis'. There's a picture on Dave's Garden as weel as the one at the link. Can you tell us which Botanical Gardens they were in? |
Here is a link that might be useful: Kalimeris

| Oh yes, flora!! I think that's exactly it! Kalmeris is a much better suggestion than any form of shasta daisy :-) It is just not a plant that comes to my mind quite as readily. |
|
| Thanks GG. This was bugging me. It just didn't look right! I don't know Kalimeris at all but I do know Shastas and couldn't square that id with my experience of them. |
|
| Hmmm.... Well, from the shots of Kalimeris, it does look more like that than a Shasta. Will double check with the botanical garden for clarification as not all of their plants are in their database -- especially new plants like this one. Will come back and let yaz know =) I think you may be correct, though. Tell ya what, all these hybrids can make ID's a pain! |
|
| Update.... These are in fact Kalimeris pinnatifida 'Hortensis'. Thank you for the correction!! |
