| This kind of pretty plant with big dark green leaves and little white flowers sprouted up behind my wood pile this summer. Reminds me a little of kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate plants at my mother-in-law's farm, but with bigger leaves. Anyone know what this is? Thank you. |

| Pokeweed, Phytolacca americana. Toxic plant. hortster |

| From what I read, this thing has a giant taproot and is not always easy to get rid of. Also that all parts of it are poisonous, though sometimes the leaves are twice boiled to make a spinach like dish. I don't have any dogs or small children, but would you recommend I still get rid of it? |

| There are many toxic plants all around us. Toxic does not equal "bad" and so you don't have to obliterate a plant just because of that. In the right place, these large and native plants are quite beautiful. If you look up "poke salat" or "poke salad" you will find more information on how people cook and eat the young shoots.
