Hi all,
My local food bank called and requested I bring in some Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) for some clients. I have fifteen large plants(they are all 4' X 4') but I don't know how to do this--do I cut it like chives, dig and divide the whole plant or do some thing else? I don't use it myself, so I'm at a loss. Also, what method do I use to deliver it-- in water, bundled in newsprint, etc? I need to harvest this today, for distribution this Sat. Sorry for the off topic, but I'm desperate and I know somebody on this forum will have an answer. Thanks so much!

I just watched a couple of Youtube videos. Apparently you can get nasty cuts from the edge of the leaves, so make sure you are careful.

Here is a link that might be useful: link to information

Someone please 'splain to me why lemon grass would be an urgent request at a food bank? I'm so curious about that.

That is a strange emergency request from a food bank. Maybe they cater to an Oriental population or are making a Thai dish? Anyway it's the base that is used in cooking, not the "blades" of grass so you have to dig up entire sections or break them off depending on how deeply yours is planted.

Thanks everybody for your help!
To answer your questions, I grow food for my local food bank in lieu of attending church. Having lived abroad I know what it's like to ache for the foods of one's homeland, so I try to grow vegetables and other oddball (to me!) comestibles to provide comfort and sustenance to people of different cultures. This is very gratifying to me as I have learned to identify, appreciate and eat plants from all over the world.
