| Assumed I was taking a cutting of Coleus, but after living with it for a couple weeks, I'm having 2nd thoughts and can't remember having any fuzzy Coleus before.
It has a stiff, square stem that feels like suede (not smooth like Perilla or Coleus,) reddish, swollen nodes, no discernible odor, formed roots since the 16th, and has arranged itself to face the light, so this is the back. Most of my Coleus are blooming and have been for a while, but the mama plant from which this cutting was taken had no flowers on 9/16, nor signs that any were there but removed. Can't find any Plectranthus pics that look just like this, but that's my next-best guess. What species would I want to compare? There are so many. Front to follow... And P.S. Has Coleus blumei been renamed again from Solenostemon scutellarioides to Plectranthus scutellarioides? If so, definitely just after a species. Where can one confirm this week's plant name changes? What is the entity that makes these decisions? Why is there a discrepancy between reputable sources as to whether or not Solenostemon scutellarioides is a valid name? Are the changes debatable? |

| It sure looks like Coleus to me. |
|
| Looks like coleus to me, too. I have one just about identical. |

| As for the classification of plants, it all depends on which taxonomist you talk to. So many get their genera changed because one taxonomist found a slight difference, all while much of the world is kicking and screaming and forbids to recognize the new classification. |

| Thanks for the responses! Eahamel, is your coleus kind of fuzzy? Does it bloom? I know there are thousands, but I've had so many over the years, I thought I knew all about them. But with the breeding they do every year, it's not surprising that something usual like fuzziness could show up in some. If they are genetically related to Plectranthus, that makes sense, and is no doubt fascinating and helpful. But not necessary to convey in the name. TPW, you sound as frustrated with this renaming thing as I am. Linnaeus is either LHAO, revolving underground, or both. |

| Purp, yes, mine is kind of fuzzy, more like a sheen. It isn't blooming, but most of my other ones are and have been. This one seems to need more water than the others. A nursery I shop at had a bed of these in front of their parking lot and they had to water it so much that the rest of the plants were looking bad, so they tore it out. All this taxonomy stuff is driving me batty, too. Linnaeus did a good job but genetic testing is making him obsolete. |

| Interesting, thanks! Can't wait to see what this does in the yard next year. Plant names were never intended to convey genetic info. Some plant names are derived from the person who discovered the plant, or just Latin words for terms like red, fragrant, and hairy. All that is necessary from a name is uniqueness and stability. |
