Could anyone tell me what plant this is? It had already set seed pods by the time I encountered it, so I have no idea what the blooms looked like. The seed pods are long, very narrow and bean-like. They are formed in sets of two. Leaves are alternate. Plant stood less than 3 feet in height. Any info/leads would be very much appreciated! :)

Perhaps an Amsonia. See if it bleeds white sap when you remove a leaf.

It certainly did Carol! I believe it is A. illustris. Thanks so much for your help. Now just have to wait until spring to see if I can catch it in bloom. :)
