Thorny Ground Cover for SW Michigan Zone 5B

Can anyone recommend a thorny ground cover hardy to zone 5B (SW Michigan)? Trying to discourage dog mess being left in front of our bushes.

Opuntia may work.

Berberis thunbergii is potentially an invasive species in Michigan.

Had you thought about an animal repellent? Havahart makes one that is reasonably effective - Critter Ridder, you'd want the longer lasting granular product, not the spray, for putting along your shrub borders. There are others.
