What came up #3

It has to be a weed but it appears to be confined to a very small area... it is 6ft+, has a red squarish thick stem; Upper leaves are narrow and simple, lower leaves (basal?) are trilobed and quite different...look almost as if 2 plants have been stuck together. Can't tell if it's flowering or if the heads are dead..very small w/reddish appearance. Found on a mtn in northern VA...but area is disturbed so I'm guessing it's NOT native!

Artemisia sp. I don't know what would be in your area but it looks a lot like A vulgaris, Mugwort.

It spreads from the roots; very difficult to get rid of.

Thanks for the input, missing. I do not see this plant anywhere else on the property...yet ...so I'm thinking it hitched a ride in the mulch....found a couple of turkey's eggs in there too....so I will pull now and hope that I get most of it!

Ragweed, surely? (Ambrosia artemisifolia, I believe).

I agree w/missing...I have LOADS AND LOADS of rag and have spent the last week trying to remove it....it doesn't seem to come anywhere near the size of the mug and the inflorescence is quite different.
