Can anyone identify this weed that grows along the lake in Elkhorn, Wisconsin? All you need to do is brush against it and your skin will burn for 24 hours.

Urtica/Stinging Nettle...OUCH!

24 hours? Crikey - that must be a potent form of stinging nettle. I find they tingle for five minutes or so. Or maybe a childhood spent playing around nettles makes Brits more immune. The traditional antidote is a dock leaf rubbed on the bumps. They are often found growing together. Look up the stinging mechanism - it's fascinating.

Perhaps some people have a stronger reaction than others. For me it goes away after 5-10 minutes. I like to eat the leaves when they are young and not quite so sting'y.

As a kid playing at my grandma's, the [baseball, football, kickball, frisbee, etc.] always landed in the biggest bunch of stinging nettle at that place - and there were a lot of patches of it. Of course we all had bare skin showing - summer t-shirts and shorts. Yup, 5-10 minutes of sting for me. I know people that react more and less than that. Just depends upon you and your sensitivities. I like nettle as a tea...especially when my allergies are acting up. Connieloef, nice photo of the plant. FataMorgana
