Plant with edible berries?

Posted by smitagup WA (My Page) on

Hi all,

Does anyone know this plant? It has berries that are black in color and inside they are purple. The berries taste similar to cherries. Are they edible?

These plants seem native to Washington state or the US Northwest.

I got many of these plants in my yard. Hoping to find out what they are...

Thanks!
-Smita

Prunus laurocerasus cultivar - please stop eating it! It's toxic.

Still a bit concerned over here - please don't eat it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Toxicity

Don't worry, we are not eating them.

Some sites say it is okay to eat the cherries as long as you don't bite or eat into the seeds. Wouldn't want to take a chance!!

I am going to see if I can have my builder take out these plants..

They are not dangerous as long as you don't nibble them. No need to condemn them completely.

Smita, if you are removing this plant because you don't like it....fine. But if doing so because of the berries, you need to remember that there are very few plants in our landscaping that are without toxic aspects.

It is not native to the Americas, by the way.

Still sold and planted in quantity but actually a pest species in this area.
