Please help ID this shade plant

These plants covered an area easily 10x20'. Each stem rose about 16-24 inches before dividing into three sets of compound leaves with leaflets measuring between 3 and 7 inches long. Pic was taken about a week ago and though the majority of leaves remained a very dark green, those with more sun exposure were changing a creamy yellow color. Plants were past bloom and onto seed production: 6-8 foot tall stems had dozens of light blue-green berries/pods encircling the top 8-12 inches.

I keep waiting for someone to ID this...but they haven't yet, so I'm going to ask...could it be Actaea racemosa?
Do you have a picture of the berries/seeds? And where was the pic taken?

I didn't take pics of the seed pods, but I did collect a few & just compared to the photos on prairie moon's page to confirm. They appear to be a match. I also did notice some blooms (pictured) present but it did not occur to me they were from the same plant since they were significantly shorter stems than those that had already set seed (now that I think about it though, the taller stems were located in much denser shade and were fewer in number, probably lighting related). Thanks for your input, mytime! FYI these were found in upstate NY, zone 5

Since this is not a plant I've ever seen, I really wasn't sure. Your picture reminded me of my A. rubra, which it clearly wasn't by your description, so I looked for another actaea that might match. That's one reason that always including a locale helps...needing to find a different member of a genus can be easier with location. Fortunately, there aren't too many actaea.

Ah, I see. I hadn't considered that. Good tip! I came across some gorgeous red-leaved varieties (Black Beauty and Brunette) which I find to be much more appealing names than bugbane. All in all a pretty cool plant just the same. Hope it will grow easily from seed, I have a lot of shaded areas to work with. Thanks again! You must have some awesome/unique plants out in Alaska, I imagine. Do you ever collect or trade seeds?

I collect seeds all the time, and then misplace them and don't get around to germinating them! I trade on occasion, but if I have something someone is looking for, I'll just send it. Rarely does anyone have something I want that is also hardy here.
