Probably a stretch :) another shade 'plant'

Unfortunately these plants were way past their prime (if they had one) by the time I got to photograph them. Found growing in dappled shade and amongst other plants, but I'm fairly certain that the seed head and foliage pictured are one and the same plant. Foliage had seen better days but plants still had an abundance of these now fragile 5-7 inch double-umbels present each with about 14 pedicels each topped by a smaller umbel holding about ten dark brown/black elongated 1/3 inch long seeds (most seeds had now dropped). Compound leaves stood only about 12 inches in height and varied in size. No noticeable color change in leaves by early fall, though many of these plants had browning or dead leaves (probably due to lack of rain)by mid Sept.

Looks like Aegopodium podagraria

A slightly better shot of the leave structure (sorry, only had my phone camera!)

Thanks again! :) Now that I've googled it, I have seen the variegated varieties locally before. Did not know the species was a NY native though.

I don't think it is a US native. But it is so aggressive a spreader that any tiny piece could root, for example if someone dumped some garden rubbish in the countryside.

Not native to the US.

Here is a link that might be useful: Goutweed

Thanks, Carrie! Good info (aside from them promoting the use of Roundup for control of it). Doesn't seem to be considered invasive in NY.
