Hello,
I keep seeing this tree all over the place. Most of the time i see groves of small skinny ones (like the one pictured) but I think I've seen really big versions of the tree too. I've seen it everywhere north of Los Angeles including Oregon, Washington and British Columbia along the sides of the highways. This picture shown is from alongside the Kern River. The tree looks like it grows very fast and doesn't have a native appearance to me (it looks like it should be growing somewhere tropical). Please let me know if you know what it is, thanks! |

| Tree of heaven, Ailanthus, and yes, it's as invasive as all get out. |

| Looks like Rhus typhina, staghorn sumac to me. If so it is a North American native that likes to build colonies. While it is a fast growing small tree, it has a short life span. FataMorgana |

| If you can get a closer picture of one of the leaflets, that might help determine which of the two it is. |

| This (cool) video shows how to distinguish ailanthus from sumacs and other trees and various ailanthus from each other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AfncAlUtOU |

| I'm gonna say that it is Ailanthus because the seeds are identical. I'm sorry I didn't get the seeds in the picture, i'm sure that would've been helpful. Also, the strange nutty smell is undeniable. Thank you all for you informative comments. They are cool looking trees, but I can see how they could become a pain. |

| Not that you misunderstood, but just to be clear: I said the video was cool, not the tree (I have no expeerience with it) :-) Gary |

Hi Definitely Rhus, stags horn sumach. Suckers everywhere. |

| The OP already confirmed it was Ailanthus based on the seeds (which was not in the picture). |
