Is this a "weed" or what?

I usually let strange volunteer plants grow in my garden until I can identify them. Haven't been able to figure out what this one that popped up this year is, and none of my friends know either.

It is now 4ft tall. Leaves are light and feathery, and have an herbal scent when crushed. They kind of taste like a lettuce? The trunk is about 1" diameter at the base, and fleshy.

It's still growing, with no sign of flowering. I like it, but it picked a bad spot to grow in!

Perhaps dog fennel, Eupatorium capillifolium.

Looks like Cosmos bipinnatus.

Here is a link that might be useful: Cosmos bipinnatus (double form)

Well, it's definitely not dog fennel. The link to the Cosmos bipinnatus looks just like this plant...except I've never seen one this big and bushy, plus there are no blooms. Hope it will bloom before frost gets here!

Thanks for your help.

Not a good idea to put unknown plants in your mouth.
