| I have this all over my lawn. Do I get rid of it with weedkiller or something else? There over hundreds; too many to pull out one by one.

Earlier in the summer, I think it put out a purple flower. |

| It looks like a violet, Viola species. |

| How do i get rid it? It does not seem to be a weed if it is viola. I have hundreds and it seems to be perennial. |

| You could dig them up, but they spread by both underground rhizome and (fairly abundant) seeds which can be 'thrown' by plants easily 5 or more feet from the plant. I personally love them and think they are much prettier than grass, even when not in bloom (in spring). They are durable, you can mow them down and they will generally bounce back. To control you can look for the seed pods that form (about this time in NY) under the leaves and pluck them before they open and fling the mature seeds. |

| thanks. I'll pluck some up and put then in my beds, but i don't like them in the lawn. |

| joy_divsion, "It does not seem to be a weed if it is viola..." Viola covers violets and pansies. Some are native and relatively rare ie 'wild flowers' in common parlance, some are native and too common ie 'weeds' icp, some are introduced as garden plants' ie 'nice flowers' icp, but they are all Violas. |

| To successfully rid it from your lawn you would need to use a broadleaf herbicide (weed killer). These do not distinguish between a plant you want to keep and one you consider to be a weed, so apply with care. FWIW, wood violets (violas) tend to seed themselves very easily and over good distances so even if planted in a flowerbed they can migrate back to the lawn. |

| If you spray, make sure you use a lawn-safe herbicide, and not a broad-spectrum herbicide like Roundup. |
