Are they crab apples?

Howabout investigating another species of Lilly Pilly such as Acmena ?

It looks like a variety of Malay Apple to me....

Syzygium is common in Southern California.

I'm backing Ted - syzigium. (They are too small for malay apple.)

We had them in Fremont when I was in grade school. There was a hedge around the neighborhood pool and playground. I don't recognize the flowers, but the fruit are unmistakeable.

I always wondered what those were!
