This flower pot didn't have anything in it and I found this growing late this summer. Its really shot up and is fairly nice looking. It doesn't seem to be a tree.. can anyone tell me what it is? I haven't seen one before. Thanks!

I would say it looks like a Cottonwood tree seedling. Rhonda

I checked and these leafs are the size of my palm. The cottonwood leaves are a bit smaller, i think so I am pretty sure its not that. thanks!!

Frequently leaves of young trees are larger than on mature trees. Instead of size, look at other identifying features: leaf attachment, leaf margins, venation, etc. It's difficult to tell exactly what the stem looks like in your photo, but the leaves sure look like tree leaves to me.

Thank you. I didn't realize the leaves would be that much bigger. The stem is light green. Hard to get a picture of stems and leaf attachments ;) After looking around, I think Rhonda is right in that it is a young cottonwood. It just looked so delicate...lol I thought it was some kind of bush. I might just let it grow, we had two trees die this year and this can replace one of them. :)

The seed is wind-blown rather than bird-dropped. Some "cottonwood" trees really live up to their name by dropping so much cotton-like fluff-covered seed that it looks like snow. FataMorgana
