The berries look tasty and i would like to try them if its safe to do so. Do you know anybody that has actually eaten them and if they did was it safe to do so?

Opinions online seem to be mixed about the berries.

The peduncles seem pretty long for S. rotundifolia. I'm not familiar with the NE species, but think S. lasioneuron is possible. And there is conflicting information about ediblity on the Internet, so why take a chance?

I would say that these berries are of carrion flower, Smilax herbacea. The peduncle (fruit stalk) on carrion flower is six to eight inches long, while the peduncle of Smilax rotundifolia Greenbrier, seldom exceeds the length of the leaf stalk. Looking at the picture the peduncle for this plant is much longer than the leaf stalk.

I believe that all parts of Smilax species are technically edible, as in non toxic. What does come under debate, however, is whether those berries are palatable or not.

Make use of Google yourself to search out recipes, etc. This plant might be able to be properly identified if you would post images of the foliage.

it is definitely growing on a fence line and does fit the description for Smilax herbacea. I googled the link and it said Indians used to eat them and said they enjoyed the berries, The net also said they called them coonberries but did not elaborate as to why they got that name? Does anybody know how they got that name?
Do you think it would be safe to just chew on a few berries and then spit them out to see if i can detect the taste without consuming any ?

I guess to be completely safe you could call a poison control center. They should have a list of poisonous/toxic plants.

The berries are not edible. The seeds are hard enough to break your teeth.

I tried planting carrion flower seeds but none of them germinated. I do not know why this plant is so difficult to propagate.
