Seems to be doing well in afternoon shade. I don't think I've seen one before and have no idea what it is.

Thanks. Viewing images of dahlias I do see some single blooms that resemble these, but the foliage is quite different. Could the plant in my picture be a dahlia considering the foliage?

It is definitely a Dahlia. Foliage colour varies from fresh pale green to deep burgundy. Heights range from a few inches to several feet. Flowers come single, double, and myriad variations of shape and size. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of named dahlias plus unnamed seedlings. There is a complex system of classification of the different types, much as in chrysanthemums.

Thanks to you all. I'm glad I asked. It's so different from the dahlias I grow that I'm surprised to find that it's a dahlia. It's nice to have a forum like this to ask about these things
