You are both correct. I just read up on it and it is considered an invasive weed, and toxic. Guess I won't be planting this in my garden no matter how pretty it is.

Lantana is not invasive. If it is toxic, it would be in large amounts. If a child were to eat a leaf I'm sure nothing would happen. The leaves do not have a pleasing fragrance so they would be adverse to trying. Lantana is highly attractive to butterflies and is a great addition to any landscape.

It depends on your location. Lantana camara proved to be highly invasive in Australia and is considered a major weed, and a huge problem in agricultural areas as it is toxic to cattle, sheep and other animals and the berries can be poisonous to children.
That said, the CULTIVARS are very pretty and IMO seed very little. It's illegal for them to be sold any more in Aussie nurseries but I still have a pretty bright yellow one that is the only hardy thing that will survive in a rockery in full sun. I keep it trimmed but even so it seldom produces fruit.
You COULD keep yours if you keep it pruned and don't let it go to seed, and so long as you are not on the fringe of some area where it could spread.
