Seems like a goldenrod (Solidago perhaps).

Oh, like a little stunted one? Or one that's just naturally diminutive? Goldenrods are peaking right now, just usually so much bigger, that didn't occur to me. I know there are a ton of those too. If it's a Solidago, I would go cross-eyed trying to figure out which one. TY for the reply!

We have one called Boott's Goldenrod (Solidago arguta ssp. Caroliniana var. boottii) that seems similar. The BONAP maps do show that S. arguta can be found in your area. It usually grows in shaded hardwoods. But, as you said, there are tons of Solidago species.
