I was given an iris from a neighbor's garden and this small plant came in the soil. It's currently in a 5 inch pot. It has dark green, spade-shaped leaves with thin flexible stems. The new leaves have a reddish-brown hue, especially on the underside. It sprouted a tiny snap-pea-like pod with a row of hard, yellow seeds inside.

Yes - Viola sp. May be sensible to check how it is behaving in the neighbour's garden. Some violets can be persistent weeds. The one in the picture appears to have already dropped seed and seems to be a spreading type from the habit too.

Thank you! I think that's it! I'm excited about having a viola. What does the "sp" refer to?

Species (in both singular and plural) Gary |

The sp. means species and is used when the species is unknown. So Viola sp. basically means "a species of violet".

twiggy_yu. This particular Viola is a violet, many of which are a bit of a nuisance in the garden. The fact it came to you in the soil of another plant underlines their propensity to spread themselves efficiently. Don't expect flowers like the Violas you may see at nurseries which look like small pansies. If and when it flowers you could come back here with a photo and maybe someone can tell you the exact species and whether it is a desirable violet or not.
