Second unknow berry in NC

Same trail, in August, 3,500 feet. Red berry, toothed leaves. Ideas?

Dear Zorba,
It appears that you have some sort of Vaccinium, possibly Vaccinium erythrocarpum. I might be wrong, though.

In your area, maybe Vaccinium angustifolium.

Vaccinium erythrocarpum is a higher elevation plant with red berries. I saw it in August near Clingman's Dome in the Smokies. It's called "southern mountain cranberry" for a reason.

Vaccinium angustifolium does not have red berries.

Angustifolium is a descriptive word meaning " with narrow leaves ", which is inconsistent with the OP's photo.
