Hello,
This is a picture of a fruit and leaves of a 12-15 foot tree. The fruit is fairly hard and about 2 inched in diameter. Leaves are strong, broad, approximately 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. The leaves near the fruit are a bit larger than the others. After cutting the fruit (which took to large knife and good strength there was no resemblance to anything I had ever seen. The pith of the fruit was hard and smelled raw. Anyone has any idea about this one? |

It reminds me of Cephalanthus but you are in India, so it could be something else entirely. The leaf arrangement and fruit look similar to some Rubiaceae so try that plant family.

Not osage orange...foliage wrong shape and osage orange has alternate leaves. I can certainly see why you suggested it though, especially the cut section.

That is a mighty strange place for a fruit to grow. Stuck on the end of a branch. Could it be some sort of gall?

I agree with Carol's suggestion of Rubiaceae. I had a look around and came across Neolamarckia cadamba which is used in Indian medicine. Google it and see what you think.

Or could it be a species of Mitragyna?

More likely Anthocephalus.
