This shrub was at a pasture's entrance, in full sun. It was four feet tall, and highly branched. The lower stem was almost 1 inch across. Leaves were opposite, crenate, very velvety above, with the largest ones on 3.5 inch long petioles and blades 6 inches long by 4 inches wide. The leaves were pretty dusty, because the plant was by a rock road. Flowers were white and 0.75 inch across, turning to a dark brown as they matured. Most of the flowers were dried, but two remained unopened (2nd photo). I unwrapped one of them to find the flower shown in the last photo. The stems were also densely hairy, with very short hairs. I could not tell for sure, but the stem hairs seemed to be stellate, like those on Croton species.

It looks like a Hibiscus or related plant.

Thanks for that accurate nudge, Carol. The plant is probably Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. lasiocarpos. I'll have to check back next year to see it in flower.
