The one usually seen here is A. elata. You tell them apart by the construction of the flowering (and fruiting) structures. I can't tell with complete confidence from this picture how this one is put together, but if it is not one spike with a central axis on the end of each branch it is not A. spinosa. If we are seeing more than one spike coming from a shared point of attachment at the end of the same branch then it is A. elata.

Thanks bboy, I'll try to get even closer. It is surrounded by spiky trees and shrubs and most of it is hiding in the crown of a hawthorn. I can't see a thing but maybe the camera can catch it.

I drove by an A. elata near here a few hours ago with the fruit spikes now hanging over each side of the branch just like in your picture.

Yes, the spikes come out of one point at the top. Took another picture (zooming helps). Thank you!

A. elata, as expected. Fruiting heads of A. spinosa (and A. chinensis, which is even less likely to be encountered here) have a central axis, that extends beyond the end of the branch. A. spinosa also flowers and fruits earlier than A. elata, would probably no longer be in fruit at this time. I know of few examples of A. spinosa in this area, one of them being one I am growing myself. It has not flowered yet, demonstrated that it is true-to-name.
