Agreed. Loosening/separating is fine, but know it's a succulent, so don't keep it soggy all of the time. It needs to dry before you add more water, then will do best if it dries quickly.

you seem like a newbie.. on some level ...

plants that procreate themselves are usually very happy ... [or near death.. lol] ....

and many houseplants like to be potbound on some level ... and that is when they multiply .... e.g. spider plants

you will rarely kill things .. its kinda within the definition of houseplant... near idiot proof..

but as your learning curve goes up ... dont be afraid.. and dont hold back.. you arent a real gardener.. until you have killed every plant 3 times..

so keep going at them.. learn... and turn that thumb green..

"and many houseplants like to be potbound on some level " This is an old wives' tale that isn't improved with more punctuation. Plants procreate when they have reached sexual maturity and all conditions required for doing so are met.

Inappropriate soil mixes often harbor so much excess moisture and so little air around roots that roots will rot if not kept in ridiculously small amounts of it. When plants are in these mixes and watered before they have dried well, the result is usually rotting roots/dead plant. (Traditionally called overwatering, but I prefer underdrying.) The constant stress is hard for the plant to live through, let alone increase its' mass rapidly, or produce flowers or stolons. When there is such a small amount of soil that even watering too often doesn't/can't rot the roots, it can help some plants limp along to stay alive long enough to become mature enough that they can eventually bloom.

There are a very few plants about which people insist, and observation is supportive, that may really be programmed to take over as much real estate as possible before reproducing other ways, but that can't be extrapolated into preferring to be potbound, just that it might not bloom if it still has the luxury of imperialism. These are 2 different things, though flowers may be the crux of human concern.

Spider plant multiplies much more rapidly when unrestricted.
