Mystery laurel (?)

kapri

Trying to ID this evergreen shrub/tree for a customer. I'm thinking some kind of laurel, but my coworkers and I can't quite nail it down. It was like a small tree 10-15'. It was cut way back and grew back quickly.
4" leaves are mildly fragrant when crushed, a sweet-ish almost citrus-y smell. It does not smell like Sweet Bay.
Customer thinks it may have had yellow flowers, but she is elderly and seemed a little unsure about that. From what I could gather the flowers were not really showy at all.
It seems like something I should know, but the synapses just aren't firing on this one!
San Francisco East bay area.
