It looks like a quince fruit...

Looks very much like an ornamental quince, Chaenomeles japonica, C lagenaria or C hybrids.

If i remember correctly they are wiry, dense shrubs, the species 6 feet and taller, the hybrids shorter, some thorns?, and a remarkable/ strong scent or aroma on those fruits, which tend to be hard as stone.

You can use them for jelly, and they contain quite a lot of pectin.

Flowers a washed out brick red ( species) or bright red, white etc ( hybrid) in late spring.

looks like quince .. take a bite.. the most bitter sour thing you will ever bite into ... it wont be in your mouth long enough to hurt you.. lol ...

kids today.. think candy revolves around the sour .. this thing makes them squeal ... lol ... too sour for even them ....

and somehow.. if you add 50 pounds of sugar.. it is said to make a nice PINK jelly .... the ornamental and the fruit version can be made into jelly ...

one of my favorite early spring flowering shrubs.. with its deep salmon flowers ... but probably not a shrub you would want on a small suburban lot..

and be careful with the 2 inch giant thorns ... on some ...
