My Helianthus maximiliani used to bloom in October. It is a sunflower, though I'm not sure whether it's the same one that you have.

It certainly looks like a sunflower, I'm not going to guess which though, because all that I would guess would not be hardy there, so can't be those :0

if it were planted another 3 to 5 feet from the house...

you might be able to get rid of that stake... and have it grow straight upwards ...

whatever it is.. i would probably move it at ground thaw in spring ... given it many weeks to grow some new roots before it starts growing upwards .... get settled in.. i mean ...

Yes, Helianthus maximilliani. I used to have a large clump of it. It bloomed in October.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the info...I did look up Helianthus maximilliani and yes I do believe it is a variety of this plant because I live in upper New England and as I said brrr....cold, lol As Ken suggested I will be transplanting in the spring to better location. Thank you so much for all the help, I can't wait to pass information on to my garden buddy who gave it to me. She will be very excited :)
