One for the experts... flowering shrub (sans flowers).

As usual, I like to make it a challenge by missing the bloom cycle and catching the plant this time even after it has dropped the majority of its seeds (not before I was able to collect a few though... they are shiny brown to black 1/4 in. long and 1/8 in. wide flattened and egg-shaped). These photo was taken the first week of September so I'm assuming plants bloom in spring to early summer, maybe later if seed matures rapidly. The seed capsules were light tan colored with what appeared to be a black coating which had all but worn off. Each of the capsules sat on a small pedestal (in loose clusters of usually ten or more) which remained after the seed pod had dried and slit apart to disperse the seeds. That's about all I've got. Located in upstate NY, zone 5. Any info would be helpful! Thank you!
