What is this please?

I found a small tree in Madison NJ covered in these. The fruit was peach colored and even smelled peachy but it was grainy/mealy and had two small hard stones inside. Because of the sweet peachy scent, I tasted a tiny bit (don't chastise please) and it was indeed very sweet on the tongue. Someone suggested "Strawberry Tree" but the images of the ones I saw online had fruit with overall bumps nothing like the pattern on this fruit. I'm sorry I did not take note of leaf shape etc. I did not think it would be that hard to identify but I haven't found any other images of fruits exactly like it yet and none of my gardening friends know what it is.
