Mystery tree volunteer

I just stumbled across a 6-foot (!) volunteer, in an area I rarely got to, in the garden. He was hidden behind/among a large hydrangea and under a dogwood.

I don't think it's a dogwood, the leaves are not opposite like the tree above.

Any ideas?

This is outside DC.

TIA

Maybe spicebush?

Wow, that would be super-cool if it was. I always wanted a spice-bush!

Looks like persimmon. Rip a leaf and smell it - it would be aromatic if it is spicebush.

I checked, it is not aromatic.

Persimmon would make sense, my neighbors have one.

Argh! Don't want a persimmon tree.
