Looks like a nut tree of some kind -- maybe like a hickory or walnut?

Any of those nearby? Squirrels probably planted it.

is the leaf naturally shiny.. or did it just rain ... as everything in the pic is shiny ...

pokeweed jumped to my mind real fast ... and then poison ivy.. but i cant really focus on any leaf edge to see if the thumb is there ... but probably neither ...

straight down pix arent the best ... but at least that got a scale in there.. lol ...

I have a small hickory in the back and a small one was growing next door.
There was also a pokeweed i was trying to get rid of about 3 feet away from this spot.

I hope it is niether of those.

Thats what i thought it was but i cannot be sure. There are a few mags in the neighbourhood.

Magnolias do not produce leaves divided into leaflets.

Can you carefully dig it up? or scrape down into the soil and look and see if there's a nut (or what's left of one)?

It's not pokeweed or poison ivy. It's clearly a tree seedling and looks as if it is going to be pinnate leaved e.g nuts or ashes.

Not poison ivy (which doesn't have to have irregular leaf margins). If it were PI, there wouldn't be such a difference in the size of the leaflets.

I vote for a tree seedling. Future leaves may have more than 3 leaflets.

That area is about 4 feet from my front door.
I might dig it up and let it grow for a while to see what it is.

carp tree in my estimate ... if growing on the edge of the walkway isnt clue enough ...

The leaves aren't shaped like Poison Ivy but it could be mutated!! Not likely but that stuff grows in the exact same areas.
