Tree flowering in October near Raleigh NC

I've attached a picture of flower from a tree that I have in my back yard. It's in a landscaped area, so I know it was planted deliberately by a previous owner, but I have no idea what it is. The odd thing is that it developed buds and started flowering about a week ago (the beginning of October).

Does anyone have a clue what it might be?
