The last photo looks like Hamelia patens.

Just wondering if the last one could be a Justicia - I've never seen one so can't be at all sure.

That first plant reminds me of Mimosa nuttallii, which is a common Texas native. However, the BONAP map at the link below shows that there are many more mimosa species in Texas for you to consider.

Thanks, all! My boyfriend and I moved into our first house in July and since then I have tried to identify all the plants and weeds on the property.

There are a few Crape Jasmine around so I thought the 3rd one was the same thing, just in a bad location. I had considered ripping it out since we already have plenty of healthy ones.

When it started blooming tiny red flowers a month ago I was mystified. I had been thinking Hamelia patens too except something wasn't quite right. I had never even heard of Odontonema strictum (Firespike).

Now I read that Firespike blooms starting in late summer or early fall so the timeline is right.

For number 1 some kind of mimosa may be right. I also found a subfamily Desmanthus. Could be one of those. I'll have to catch it in bloom.

Number 2 - I don't know why liriope had not even crossed my mind! There are other clumps of liriope here and there but these leaves are much lighter. I'll have to do some more investigating, i.e., dig it up.

Desmanthus is usually unarmed (without prickles), and upright. Mimosa is usually prostrate, low-spreading, or trailing, with prickles. If your plant is unarmed, you can check potential Desmanthus species in Texas at the link below.

Plant #2 in the pictures above has flowered. I'm not so sure about the liriope ID anymore. Any guesses?

*I don't know why it looks blurry there. The flowers are also more pinkish purple than the picture shows.

Compare with Tulbaghia violacea aka Society Garlic.

I'm not familiar with Society Garlic, but those flowers aren't any Liriope I've seen. Also, Liriope flowers are arranged vertically along a spike, while on the pictured plant, all the pedicels are attached to the stalk at the end of the stalk.

Definitely not Liriope.

Thanks, floraluk and rina! I crushed a leaf to see if it smelled like garlic (yep) but then made the mistake of throwing it in the kitchen trash can. Within minutes the smell had permeated the area. blech.
