A photo of the entire shrub would be helpful. Do all the sepals recurve like that?

It looks most like the very popular Fuchsia magellanica 'Riccartonii'.

I'll take some photos of the bush tomorrow as it's currently dark outside. I must say that it looks identical to the second photo down on this page:

Can you give some scale? Is this a large or small flowered Fuchsia? It doesn't look much like F magellanica to me. That has slimmer flowers. It looks closer to Mrs Popple, a very common hardy Fuchsia.

We do additionally have 'Mrs Popple', but this one has larger flowers and is taller growing. We've had it for about 12 years and originally bought from one of the mail order firms (Gardening Direct?).

The largest flower measures 7cms from the end of the petals (excluding the ovary). Here's more of the bush, but the lower part is just bare hardwood stems - click the image to expand.

OK - I've changed my opinion. That is NOT 'Riccartonii' :-)

There are so many varieties of hardy and semi-hardy fuchsias here that resemble this, I don't know where to start. I'll leave it to the local experts.

Maybe you can catch a flower show with a Fuchsia exhibit and talk to someone. Or try emailing BFS. Or perhaps ask gardening direct? They don't carry many Fuchsias so they may have some stalwarts they have supplied for a while.

I once bought a hardy Fuchsia, here in Switzerland, it was called Voltaire (by Lemoine, 1897), and the nursery lady said it would grow really tall, like 4 feet easily. It died in some winter, probably chose a bad spott for it. I think the size/ height could help to narrow it down.

The colors seem to be similar with yours, well, still quite a long shot,

Thank you all for your suggestions but, each time I look at photos of Fuchsias,
the list of 'possibles' gets longer and longer. We used to go to one of the big flower shows in the past, but we've not been recently.
