Mystery rosette in NW NJ

| Hi,
Anybody recognize this rosette of leaves? Taken at the end of October in an open, very shady, low mixed hardwood forest in northwestern NJ. Looks like there was a single flower stalk. I only found one of these.
Thanks.

| Nobody, huh? Well, anyway that makes me feel better that I don't recognize it either. I'll have to try to find it again next year and see if I can catch it in bloom. Thanks for looking. WW |

sorry - no help here. I was waiting for someone to reply because I stumbled on to something similar in march/april. From what I remembered, it looked a lot like what you have posted. When I went back in april with camera, although you can see that elongated leaf still, it appears quite different. don't know if this is a different plant that sprouted near by, or early seasonal growth of the one that looks like yours???
don't know if it'll help at all but this shot was taken in early april (SE NY State - mainland) and was visible before then. |

| It looks as if the rosette might be sweet rocket (hesperis matronalis), which often grows wild at the edge of forests here in PA. |

| I thought the first one looked like something from the Aster family (big help, I know). Unfortunately could not be more specific than that! |

| Actually, I think it looks like something from the aster family too. In fact, I'm thinking maybe it's a Senecio, maybe obovatus. Which I guess is now Packera obovata. Gleason says the basal leaves get up to 20cm and another site says they are more or less evergreen. I'm not familiar with it, though. And I'm supposed to be making a plant list for this site, so I guess I'm going to have to try to find it again in the spring when it blooms. Bubbleoffplumb, could yours be Swamp Saxifrage, Saxifraga pennsylvanica? What I can see of it doesn't look quite the same to me. How far away from the NYC area was that? I don't think it's Hesperis matronalis, partly because I don't see any reference to basal leaves in the description of it, and mostly because Dame's Rocket is pretty common around here, too, and I think it would look more familiar to me. Thanks, WW |

| Swamp Saxifrage has larger, rather fuzzy leaves and they would be all basal, so I think you can rule that one out. |

| Chamaelirium luteum? Be kind, it's only a guess.... |

"How far away from the NYC area was that?" I'm on the west side of the hudson river - very close to the tappanzee bridge. I'm not sure what I 've got there - forgot about it until I saw your photo. I haven't seen it flower. Weather permitting, I'll sneak a peek at it tomorrow - see if there are any more clues about. If you think it confuses more than helps with your ID, let me know and I'll remove the image - no problem :) |

deejaus in the link you provided I do see some similar characteristics to my (#2) photo. thank you. I would have to take a much closer look. if the past few years are anything to go by - the odds of a threatened/endangered plant on my bit o land would be very slim ;) |

| Bubbleoffplumb, I just noticed that yours appears to have serrated leaves. Is that right? If so, my guess is way off. |

| I wish it were Chamaelirium luteum, that's a cool plant. I never heard of it growing around here, though. Do see if you can find it again and get another picture. The young leaves especially look awfully familiar, I just can't place them. We're almost neighbors - I'm down in Closter. Although the origianl plant I was trying to ID was out by the Delaware Water Gap. WW |

| It's not Chamaelirium luteum - we have a lot of that and I am very familiar with it. bubbleoffplumb's plant looks familiar too - I wonder if it could be one of the blue Lobelias (like Lobelia siphilitica)? |
