Actually I think that might be Goat's Rue, Tephrosia virginiana. Attractive bi-colored flowers on a low plant, followed by bean-like seedpods.

The question is Senna (as a genus) or Tephrosia virginiana?

I don't really know. The seed pods don't seem very fuzzy as appear to be indicated for Tephrosia virginiana. But that could be an age issue where the fuzz has dropped off.

Well, one way you could try is that Senna leaves have pretty obvious dark glands at the base of the leaves; if those are present it would be senna. The pictures don't show the leaf bases in great enough detail to tell.

I admit I'm not real familiar with senna, but the ones I've seen are taller than Tephrosia, which only gets about 18"to maybe 2' high; and the flowers in senna are clustered all along the stem, whereas Tephrosia has flower clusters (and therefore fruit) mostly only at the tips of the stems. Which is what I think I see in your picture.
I agree the pods aren't very fuzzy, but they also look pretty mature; maybe it rubs off.

The plant is located at some distance from here and requires about a 1/2 mile trail walk from the car to get to it. It's been raining here for the past two days, but maybe when things dry out I'll see if I can refind it and check out more of the details.

It's been suggested to me that the Tephrosia virginiana leaf branch generally ends in 1 terminal leaflet, vs what appear to be paired leaflets at the end of my specimen. I don't know if this is a reliable identifying feature.

Another possibility that's been suggested is Senna occidental. Although the USDA doesn't indicate a record of it appearing in PA, it does appear in some surrounding states, so it may very well be here also.

Do I hear any votes for Senna occidental?

If you do get back to it, I wonder if opening the pod and taking a picture of the seeds would help too.

Another suggestion I've received is that of Senna marilandica, which seems like a reasonable possibility also.

It looks to me like Senna hebecarpa, American senna.
