Would really appreciate any ideas on this iris, blooming now at 1,200 ft elevation in Calif foothills east of Sacramento. Very short flower stems, as you will see in following photos. Not Pacific Coast hybrid, which has much thinner rhizomes and won't bloom for another few months.
Thanks in advance! |

| As mentioned, flower stems are quite short --3 to 5 inches. |

Small piece of rhizome. Quite different from Pacific Coast hybrid roots, which are darker, thinner, and entangled; these rhizomes resemble Bearded Iris in growth pattern, though are smaller. Sorry about the lousy focus on these pics and thanks for any suggestions. |

| Iris foetidissima. beefsteak iris as its called over here. Crush one of the leaves and it smells of roast beef!. |

| It does not look like Iris foetidissima to me. Those have broader foliage and the flower stems are not so short and the pods are large and showy. Iris foetidissima has strap-like petals. |

| Ok, then its Iris unguicularis. |

| I would say Algerian iris also. I've known and grown this plant for years. |

| I agree with unguicularis. For one, it's about the only species that can bloom at this time of year and both the flowers and foliage look right. Algerian iris are often described as having 'almost no stem' :-) |
