Name That Plant!

Deciduous tree w/ seed heads like pine cones

Took this photo about a week ago when colors were just beginning to turn. Tree is a bit too tall for me to get a better close up with my little camera, so hoping this is good enough to give you an idea. Overall height was 25+ feet and unfortunately I forgot to snap a shot of the form/trunk. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Alnus species I should say. I don't know the N American ones.

Looks a bit like Alnus serrulata, but depends on where you are in zone 5. That species runs, diagonally, from the northeast states to northern Missouri, then south. Species distributions are shown on the BONAP map at the link below.

Great! Thanks to you both for the assistance and for the resource you provided, jekeesl. Wasn't familiar with the site and that should come in handy. I do believe you nailed it with A. serrulata; this is growing in Eastern NY, a bit north of the state capital.
