Randon plant w/ thick Red Root grwing near garden

8 of these plants have popped up near my garden and I never planted them. They look like beets, but I'm not sure. Can anyone help me identify them?

Not beets - wrong leaves. Something in the Brassicaceae. Maybe radish, rutabaga or turnip. What is the interior of the bulb like? Does it smell peppery?

This looks like a purple top turnip. They are very tasty and the greens are edible as well.
